From the Skies to the Soil: My Journey from USAF Enlisted Aviator to Pepper Company Founder

October 5, 2025 | Aaron Soto

As I sit here in my garden, surrounded by the vibrant green of pepper plants and the rich scent of soil, I often reflect on the incredible journey that brought me from the cargo compartment of a C-17 to the helm of Petaluma Pepper Company. Leaving the United States Air Force after years of service as an enlisted aviator and loadmaster was not just a career change—it was a profound shift in perspective, from the vast skies to the grounded earth. Today, I want to share that story, a personal essay on how my time in the USAF shaped me into the farmer and entrepreneur I am today.

🚀 Early Days in the USAF

Building Foundation for a Life of Service

My journey began right after high school when I enlisted in the United States Air Force. I was drawn to the structure, the discipline, and the opportunity to serve something greater than myself. Basic training at Lackland Air Force Base was intense, but it built a foundation of resilience that I carry with me today. From there, I was selected for the enlisted aviator program, a path that would lead me to the skies and beyond.

The early days were about learning the ropes—aircraft systems, flight theory, and the camaraderie that defines military life. I remember the long hours studying for my first certifications, the thrill of my first flight, and the sense of purpose that came with wearing the uniform. The USAF wasn't just a job; it was a calling.

✈️ Becoming an Enlisted Aviator

Training to become an enlisted aviator was rigorous. I spent months at various bases learning to fly and operate aircraft, earning my wings as a loadmaster and aviator. The program demanded precision, quick thinking, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

Distinguished Graduate Achievement

I graduated as a distinguished graduate, a title I wear with pride, symbolizing not just skill but dedication. As a loadmaster, I was responsible for the cargo and passengers on board, ensuring every mission was executed flawlessly. This role taught me the importance of attention to detail, a skill that translates directly to my work in the garden today, where every seed and plant requires careful monitoring.

🛩️ Flying C-130s and C-17s

Mastering Iconic Military Aircraft

I had the privilege of flying on two iconic aircraft: the C-130 Hercules and the C-17 Globemaster. The C-130, with its versatility and reliability, took me to remote airfields and challenging environments. The C-17, larger and more advanced, handled global missions with ease.

Each flight was a lesson in teamwork, as we worked in sync to deliver supplies, troops, or aid wherever needed. These aircraft became my second home. I logged countless hours in the air, from routine training flights to high-stakes operations. The views from the cockpit—sunrises over mountains, city lights at night—were breathtaking, but it was the sense of duty that kept me going.

📦 Air Drop Special Operations

One of the highlights of my career was participating in Air Drop Special Operations. These missions involved parachuting supplies or equipment into areas where landing wasn't possible, often in support of special forces or humanitarian efforts. The precision required was immense, and the stakes were high.

Airdrop Procedures

Specialized training in precise cargo deployment techniques for critical missions.

Low-Level Flight

Advanced piloting skills for challenging terrain and restricted airspace operations.

Mission Planning

Strategic coordination and execution of complex multi-element operations.

🏆 Certifications and Achievements

Excellence Through Continuous Improvement

I was part of the SOLL II program, which I absolutely loved. The work was hard, and the training never stopped, but it was incredibly rewarding. I was recognized as a distinguished graduate in multiple programs, a testament to my commitment to excellence.

These achievements weren't just about personal growth; they were about contributing to the team and the mission. The USAF instilled in me a culture of continuous improvement, which I apply to my farming practices today. Just as I strived for perfection in the air, I now aim for the best in my soil and crops.

🌱 The Transition to Civilian Life

After years of service, the decision to leave the USAF was bittersweet. The military had given me purpose, skills, and lifelong friends, but I felt a pull towards something new.

From Military Precision to Agricultural Excellence

Transitioning to civilian life meant adapting to a different rhythm, but my experiences prepared me well. I moved back to my roots, focusing on what I love: the earth and growing things. The discipline from the USAF translated into meticulous garden planning, and my aviator's precision became careful plant care. It wasn't an easy shift, but it was rewarding.

🌶️ Founding Petaluma Pepper Company

From Hobby to Professional Agriculture

Founding Petaluma Pepper Company was the culmination of my journey. What started as a hobby in my backyard grew into a business dedicated to sustainable, high-quality pepper cultivation. My USAF background informs every aspect—from the structured approach to growing to the emphasis on quality and reliability.

Today, as I tend to my super hot peppers and cannabis plants, I see parallels between flying missions and farming. Both require planning, execution, and adaptation. The USAF taught me to "stay loyal to the mission," and now I stay loyal to the soil.

🌍 Final Thoughts

Leaving the USAF was a pivotal moment in my life, transitioning from the skies to the soil. As an enlisted aviator and loadmaster on C-130s and C-17s, with experience in Air Drop Special Operations and numerous certifications, I learned lessons that shape me today.

Founding Petaluma Pepper Company is my new mission, grounded in the same principles of excellence and service. If you're considering a career change or pursuing a passion, remember: the skills you gain in one field can bloom in another.
